KIRSTEN C. HOPES-MCFADDEN FOR VICE PRESIDENT OF NEW HAVEN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS (NHFT) 933

Making a Difference Together

My name is Kirsten C. Hopes-McFadden. After becoming a lawyer, I decided that I would rather teach middle school. This is my 22nd year teaching in the New Haven Public School System. I have taught every major subject to 6th through 8th grade students. Currently, I am teach 8th grade Social Studies at ESUMS. I teach my favorite subject to my favorite humans on earth. I do not say this because of some syrupy view of the world. Anyone who knows me knows that is not true. No, I say this because you always know where you stand with an 8th grader. And I usually appreciate their honesty. I have decided to enter the race for Vice-President because throughout my tenure as teacher for New Haven I have had extensive experience with the union and have had first hand experience with the union's leadership or lack thereof. At a time when teachers are vilified and scapegoated for all that is wrong with education, I believe it's time for me to step up and do my part to improve working conditions and thereby school climate and culture. I know the contract extensively and I am the go to person for any contract issue in my building. I will use my legal training to uphold the contract and negotiate the best working conditions for my fellow colleagues. At New Haven Federation of Teachers (NHFT) 933, working together and standing as one are at the forefront of our efforts. We are a dedicated Labor Union fighting for the rights of our community members, forming successful partnerships and negotiating better working conditions. Learn more about the impact we have and how we inspire positive change.

REDUCE AND/OR ELIMINATE DISTRICT ASSESSMENTS

Increase Instructional Time

District assessments add little to nothing to the overall education of children. They reduce instructional time and pit schools against each to determine who has the "smartest" children. Standardized tests in and of themselves at best measure wealth of the students. District assessments measure less.
